Spotlight on Savannah

I’m really excited that Savannah has agreed to be my guest today. I’m sure you’ll enjoy hearing about her. Put your paws together and give her a warm Clowie’s Corner welcome!

Russian Blue cat Savannah

Savannah

Clowie: Thank you for joining me today, Savannah. Let’s begin with you telling us a little about yourself.

Savannah: I am a 5 year old Russian Blue type cat, with totally darling white markings!

C: Very cute!

Savannah: No, seriously, they are really, really special! I have really cool toes on my front paws…sort of a French mani if ya know what I mean?

C: Ooh, I’ve never had a manicure – très chic!

Savannah: My toes on both front paws have these really cute white tips…then, my back paws have almost complete white socks! Neat, huh?! Oh, and there is more,…I have this very nice large white bib under my chin, on my neck…very striking if I must say!  And then, I have these two great diamond shape white markings on my tummy. Nice!

C: Your markings are purrrrfect! Would you like to tell us about your home?

Savannah: I have only been in my furrever home since January 3 2012, but I really like it lots. I still have to try to overcome my fear of being picked up…and I don’t do laps, at least not yet. Maybe one day I will be able to let Dad and Mom pick me up and stuff…just not now.

C: That isn’t very long, these things take time. How did you come to live with them?

Savannah: Oh Clowie…this is such a great story! My Dad and Mom were looking for a private no kill rescue organization where they could volunteer. You see, they are retired and want to give back to their community, especially to animals. And they had just lost their last of 3 before me senior cats about two months earlier.

They read about a place called Kitty Corner, owned by Contra Costa Humane Society which is located just about a mile away from their house, which is near San Francisco in sunny California! Convenient, huh?

C: Yes, very!

Savannah: Anyways, Dad and Mom visited Kitty Corner and someone pointed out this sweet but very shy and terrified cat who almost never comes out of her cubby bed…that was me!!!

Savannah asleep in her office in her furrever home – not such a scaredy cat now!

I had been there for 11 months and no one wanted me. In fact, some of the volunteers had been whispering that I was “unadoptable” and maybe I should be euthanized. I was just so scared, and no one knew, but I had a really bad painful bladder infection too. So I didn’t come out of my hiding places. Some of the volunteers thought I was “angry” or “unsociable”.

C: That’s so sad. How did you come to be there?

Savannah: Before Kitty Corner I was in the local county animal shelter, a kill shelter, for about 3 months. Someone dumped me in the night drop off cage so no one knows if I was a stray or maybe a family just didn’t want me anymore. Anyway, I was only hours from being destroyed when a volunteer from Kitty Corner pulled me to take me home as her foster. Then in a few days a space opened up for me at Kitty Corner, pheww! Close call!

C: I’m glad that you were fortunate enough to find a good home with bipeds that are helping you to become more confident. I believe you enjoy playing now – what is your favourite game?

Savannah: Oh cat! I’ll have to think about that one…well, I would have to say that I really most like playing “Oh No! Mice in the Bed”…I do that with Mom and Dad when they are in bed…you know…it’s the one where they wriggle their feet and I pretend there are mice in the bed and try to kill them. Lots of fun! Of course, I did damage Mom that one time, but she got over it.

That’s how to pounce on a mouse – oops!

C: Accidents happen! We have to be so careful when we play with bipeds because their skin is so vulnerable. Remembering their distinct lack of fur, especially if we’re excited about a game, can be quite problematic at times.

I have one last question for you – do you have a favourite book?

Savannah: Absolutely! I just adore TS Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”. I especially like the poem about Ad-dressing A Cat…oh yeah, and the one about the Naming of Cats…just great stuff!

C: That’s one of my favourites! It’s a lovely blend of humour and insight.

Thank you so much for being my guest today.

  1. HooOOooooowWWWWwwwwLLLLLLoooooo Clowie 🙂 Savannah is beautiful and I love her white bits! What lovely little white paws 🙂 I know a cat a little like her, she doesn’t like being picked up or sitting on laps much so far, but she loves to play – she’s got an incredibly strong hunting instinct and whilst leaping after a pigeon feather tonight slam-dunked straight into a brick wall paws first and bounced straight back off it, coming back for more! I’m sure Savannah will come round to biped cuddles in time, she’s already doing ever so well and looks very content and happy with her bipeds. That was a great interview! Wolfie hug for you 🙂

    • Thank you, Wolfie! She is gorgeous, isn’t she? Her bipeds are understanding and patient and she is improving. It’ll be lovely if she does cuddle them one day!
The kitty you were watching sounds very cute!

      • She is 🙂 I think I’ve started something playing “feather” with her though! She turned up the next morning, saw me in the kitchen and promptly went off and found the feather and carried it all the way to the back door and put it down on the mat expecting moi to come out in my dressing gown and play feather with her!! Today I turned around to find her sitting on my stairs watching me with the dust pan and brush (it looks like Mars in my house since the builders knocked the chimney down in the sitting room on Sat! Don’t know how long she’d been watching but I think she thought the dustpan brush was a nice juicy rat to pounce on!

        • My biped says she had a cat once that liked playing with brushes. He used to look very funny dragging a broom around!

          • I should think he did! I would imagine it was considerably larger and more cumbersome than his relatively little furry feline self! This one seemed to think the brushing up of Mars dust on the floor was for her hunting benefit! I suppose they could confuse a broom with prey!!!

          • He was only a tiny kitten the first time he dragged a broom about – it didn’t look possible! Some cats chase anything that moves and if it isn’t moving they try to make it move!

          • It’s amazing what they can get up to! It’s hilarious when little tiny dots of kits take on objects several times there size and drag them around – they have such determined little spirits don’t they!

  5. That was a very good interview Clowie. Savannah is such a beautiful cat and all the zoo here really like her and understand what she went through. You managed to get her to talk very openly about her difficult start. You are a natural. Maybe you should do TV interviews?
