Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

At this time of year, we often wake up to an upside down world where we’re above the clouds.

misty morning

Above the clouds!

There aren’t many minutes each morning to get a decent photograph. My biped tells me that it’s still too dark and when I remind her a few minutes later, it’s turned into a mist hiding the mountains. As soon as the sun hits the cloud, it starts to drift upwards and the magical effect is lost. These photographs were taken in the Spring when we also sometimes see the clouds below us in the mornings after it’s rained.

My bipeds tell me that “mellow fruitfulness” means things like this butternut squash! Well, I know that bipeds like food almost as much as dogs do, but I don’t think it’s a subject for poetry.

I think John Keats meant to say “mountain walks and hikes”. Autumn is the perfect season for hiking in the mountains. The higher parts are at their most accessible. This is partly because of the temperatures and partly because there’s hardly any snow.

Paths that are easily walked at this time of year are covered in snow in the winter and spring. It’s fun to walk up the mountain to the snow and play, but it’s also fun to explore more tracks higher up the mountains while they’re free of snow.

I love it when I see my bipeds get rucksacks (backpacks) ready and put their walking boots on. I know we’re going on a hike and I go and wait by the door. I try to wait very patiently, but sometimes they take so long getting ready that I have to sigh! They laugh and tell me they won’t be long. There’s nothing I like better than spending the whole day walking with my bipeds, it’s my favourite thing about the autumn.

What do you enjoy most about this time of the year? Autumn or Spring, depending which hemisphere you live in!

The title is the first line of “To Autumn” by John Keats.

See you next Wednesday!

@”Autumn is the perfect season for hiking in the mountains.” – yes, true! πŸ™‚ I’ve always loved fall, in general and October in particular… πŸ™‚

  4. Ideal season to nap longer on the human bed =^.^=

  5. So beautiful, C. You nailed the meanings of that poetic title. Now, Mom wants to eat butternut squash soup. It is autumn here. My favorite activity is going along with Mom no matter what she is doing. She says she should’ve named me Shadow.

    Love and licks,

  6. Oh gorgeous photos today Clowie! I bet it’s wonderful getting to hike around in that scenery! I like this time of year because there is always delicious food πŸ˜‰ But it’s also nice when it starts to cool down finally.

    • Thank you! There are lots of lovely places to walk here and I usually manage to find a stream to splash in. It is nice to be able to get out and about more after hiding from the sun for a while!

  7. I love the autumn Clowie…the atmosphere and the glorious colours…but I must admit that I’m not enjoying it much at all just now – takes time to adjust to the wind and the rain again! Oh and there’s always that question of having to wake up and function in the morning which currently is more like the middle of the night! lol πŸ˜‰ I do love those crisp sunny mornings with a touch of autumn frost though :)And the smell of autumn when we all go kicking through those lovely crunchy autumn leaves! πŸ™‚

    • Wet and windy is not nearly so much fun as dry and sunny – I don’t mind how cold! I like it when there are lots of crunchy leaves to sniff. My bipeds don’t like dark mornings!

  8. Those are great photos. I would LOVE to see something like this in the morning where I live! You are a very lucky dog, Clowie, to be able to go on extended hikes with your bipeds.

My favorite thing about autumn here is the gradual cool down in the weather, always eagerly awaited after a typical long, hot summer. Sadly what little change we have in outdoor color comes closer to Thanksgiving. πŸ™

    • Thank you! It does lift our spirits in the morning to look out and see such beauty. It is a wonderful place to go out for long walks. We don’t see much in the way of autumn colour, most of the trees are evergreen.

  9. Beautiful. We love autumn because the air is so crisp and the insects are starting to dwindle. We can play outside longer because the summer sun isn’t threatening to overheat us. Hiking is a fun activity for us too.

    • Thank you. It is lovely to be able to take longer walks again. Some insects are trying to move indoors to escape the cooler air, that doesn’t please my bipeds!

  10. You live in such a beautiful place! I love the crisp cool air of autumn, and the beautiful colors and changes. I don’t hike as much as I used to, but I am planning to go this weekend with my sister and two of the dogs, and we are very excited to get out there!

  11. I love the beautiful colors on the trees and bushes best, especially when conditions are right for the show to last for weeks on end. The cooler temperatures and lower humidity are nice, too. It is a wonderful time to get out and walk. And lucky you to have such beautiful mountains to hike!

    • It is a beautiful place to walk, there’s so much to explore. It’s lovely to be able to get out more now the temperatures have dropped. Most of the trees around us stay green, so I miss the autumn colours a little.

  12. You have such heartfelt and inspiring posts. Kudos to you (and
    Clowie too!)

  13. The human always quotes that poem at me this time of year! mol. What I like is that you can have days of rain and then all of a sudden you get a day that is almost like spring again!! I guess that is partly what that boyo Keats meant!! xx

    • Hi Austin, I worry about them sometimes, the changing seasons seem to affect their brains! It is lovely to go out and enjoy it when there’s a fine day at this time of the year.

  14. Sorry Clowie I tried to respond yesterday but for some unknown reason my iPhone was not sending my comments. I LOVE your morning views! Oh how I would enjoy having views like that from my home. You are one lucky dog to be able to go on walks with your humans and see such scenery.

In Texas I most look forward to fall because it finally cools down after the almost unbearable heat of summer. With your coat you would certainly not be happy here. We don’t have any fall colors, though, and I really miss seeing that (maybe just a little around Thanksgiving). πŸ™

    Have a great week!

    • A comment from you did get through, but it’s lovely to hear from you again! We love the scenery here. It gets quite hot here, but it’s usually a dry heat and the early mornings are quite pleasant – apart from a few weeks at the height of summer. Most of the trees here are evergreen, so we don’t get to see much in the way of changing colours.

  15. Autumn is our favouritest season of the year!! πŸ™‚ Wonderful photos, Clowie, you’ve got the talent!! πŸ˜‰

  16. Looks like a lovely place to head out for a walk.

  17. Great view! My sweet Clowie, how are you? The new appearance of your blog is beautiful.
I’m sending you many many dog kisses and I’m wagging my tail with joy to you…

  18. Clowie, the mountains are beautiful. I love the way you can be above the clouds in the morning! Autumn is the best month, don’t you think. It is a great time for hiking and/or long walks and the smells in the air are fabulous.

  19. Do you ever go walking in the clouds, Clowie? Those are beautiful photos. And I prefer autumn. Flowers bloom so much of the year, but leaves only really turn colors once.

    • Yes, I do get to walk in the clouds sometimes. They can be all wispy with the sun getting through, or really thick so that you can’t see far. It’s nicer looking down on them!

  20. Hi Clowie ! I love winter most of all … And it has been snowing today πŸ™‚ … But i like all four season and so does Maria too.
Beautiful photos in your post ! // Yarri πŸ™‚

    • I’m glad you like my photos! I like winter when it’s sunny and cold, not when there are grey skies. I love snow! We won’t see any yet, even on much higher ground.

  21. Such beautiful photos, Clowie!

  22. Hi beautiful Clowie! What gorgeous scenery you show in the photos……it’s a fitting place for a pretty girl like you to live in…….

  23. What beautiful photos! I especially like the first one. Is this the view from your house? How wonderful to wake up to these lovely views!

    • Thank you! Yes, the photos were taken from an upstairs window. It is lovely to look out at scenery like that, but you also enjoy wonderful views where you live.

  24. I love fall, Clowie! It’s my favorite time of year….. well, next to winter, that is.
