We thought it would be fun to celebrate Pi Day this year at Pi Blogs, so I thought I’d write a post about pi.
Pi Day is celebrated every year on 14th March (03/14). It is also Albert Einstein’s birthday, which seems very appropriate.
I sat down with one of my bipeds to chat about what I could say about pi. I thought you all probably already knew that if you multiply the diameter of a circle by pi you get the circumference. And that pi is a very long number indeed, such a long number that no one knows how long! Then my thoughts began to drift.
I heard my biped ask, “What are you thinking about, Clowie?”
I answered, “Pie!”
She asked, “Why does thinking about pi make you drool?”
I replied, “Not pi, but pie, steak and kidney to be precise.”
She said, “Oh, I see. I’d prefer apple, or perhaps blackberry and apple. I like pumpkin pie as well.”
I gave her a look as this was hardly helpful! She suggested that we take a short break for refreshments to help focus our minds. That was a bit more helpful!
After my treat, I decided to look and see how bipeds celebrate Pi Day. Some of them have competitions to see how many digits of pi they can recite, but I was quite surprised to find that many of them celebrate with pi pies. They obviously have the same problem as I do – their minds keep turning to pie!

Grab a piece of whichever pie takes your fancy while I tell you a few more things about pi. It is sometimes called the Archimedes’ Constant because Archimedes was the first mathematician to devise a method of calculating pi. He proved that pi is between 223/71 and 22/7. Pi Approximation Day is celebrated on 22nd July, as 22/7 is still used as an approximation of pi.
The practice of memorising a large number of digits of pi is called piphilology. Pi has been calculated to trillions of decimal places, but that seems a little extreme when it’s said that thirty-nine digits are sufficient to calculate the volume of the known universe with the precision of one atom. (See motivations for computing pi.)

What do you get when you divide the circumference of the sun by its diameter? Pi in the Sky! You will find a Pi Day post there today.
Happy Pi Day!

Yep, you definitely lost me on that post Clowie.
Cheers.
I hope you enjoyed a slice of pie while you were here. Thank you for visiting me.
Never knew all those details Clowie – a bit mind boggling at 5.16 AM early start on a Saturday morning! 🙂 Had freshly baked steak pie from an independent bakers last night though if that helps – but sadly no Pi symbol on it! Have a good Pi day with the bipeds!
It is a bit early in the day for so many numbers! I’m sure your pie tasted just as good without a pi symbol. I hope you’re having a good week.
We are very impressed Clowie, but we do now understand all those numbers, we definitely get that many treats. And Mom has never baked a pie since she doesn’t like them, so we don’t know what that is either.

I don’t often get pie, and only a tiny pice when I do, but I can assure that it is delicious!
Sorry we ment to say we never get that many treats:(

Ah, I don’t think any of us get enough treats!
Awesome post, dear Clowie… Number Pi looks like the infinity (and beyond)… Oh … And now I want a slice of any of those yummy Pi cakes!. Best wishes & happy weekend! Aquileana 😀
Thank you. Pi might encounter Buzz Lightyear in infinity and beyond!
Have a great week!
Happy Pi Day and Happy Birthday Albert! The nickname of my mom’s cousin is Pi, because he is a number cruncher…. mom thinks he is probably adopted … math is a miracle for all other members of her furmily :o)

Oh Clowie you’re such a smart girl – thanks for telling me all about pi……I too would prefer PIE vs. pi, but I do find it interesting to learn stuff so I’ll take “one of each” please! HAHAHA
Love, Sammy

Thank you, Sammy. I hope you found the bacon pie I put out especially for you!
Mom says pi gives her a math headache, but pie makes her want something chocolatey!

I hope she found a pie she liked in the selection I made.
Math was never my favorite subject (yet somehow I ended up becoming a bookkeeper)! “Pie” is definitely more interesting, and now I am hungry. Is it too early in the morning for a piece of custard pie? That is one of my favorites. The dogs will go for blueberry. 🙂

It’s never too early in the morning for a slice of pie! I hope you all enjoyed the pie.
I’m wondering who invented pie. He must have been even smarter than Einstein 🙂

Yes, pie is a very good invention. I’m surprise you’re not telling me a cat invented it!
Oh boy, we sure do like the looks of those pi pies. wag wag wag

Yup, a unique date. And at 9:26 and 53 seconds in the morning we will be at 3.141592653, a once in a lifetime coincidence which deserves to be celebrated with pie. Of course, that’s only if your time convention has you writing in the day/month/year format. If not, well, any excuse for pie will do!
That’s definitely worthy of celebration! Pie is always good.
Wait….what??
hahahahahaha!!!
