My First Holiday Part 1

I was almost ten months old, when my bipeds started talking about going away for a long weekend. I thought this probably meant that I was going to the kennels, as I’d stayed there overnight a few times. It was very nice at the kennels and I was always pleased to see the people there, but I preferred being with my bipeds.

I heard them talking about a fun dog show, especially for large breeds. That sounded like it could be lots of fun. Why would they want to go to something like that without me? I heard them making phone calls and making arrangements to stay away.

I saw them doing some packing and making lists, so I knew the weekend in question was getting close. Then the cats’ baskets were brought out and the cats were put in them and one of the bipeds picked up car keys. I went and waited by the front door, but I was told I couldn’t go. This was confusing – I thought I was going to the kennels!

When my biped came home again, she didn’t have the cats with her. I decided I’d better watch every move she made and I stayed by her side. She gathered up loads of my things and put them in bags next to the packed suitcase. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but I was ever so excited.

The male biped came home and had something to eat, then he asked, “Are we ready then?”

She replied, “Yes, I think so!”

He said, “Don’t sound so worried, the first place is less than an hour from home – it’s easy to come back if things are not working out!”

They picked up the car keys and asked me if I wanted to get in the car. Of course I did! After I was settled comfortably in the car, they brought everything else out and then they locked the front door and we set off.

We stopped after about half an hour and we had a walk. Then we got back in the car and set off again. About twenty minutes later we parked the car again and I had a short stroll with my bipeds. Then the male biped went into a building, while I waited outside with the female. He soon appeared in the doorway and beckoned to us to join him.

We went across to him and we went through the door together. There were a couple of bipeds who I’d never met before. One of them came up to me and stroked me and gave me a treat. I was almost too excited to take the treat! Then the other one came across and made a fuss of me as well. They told me how lovely I am and then they told my bipeds to ask if there was anything we needed.

We went along the corridor and unlocked a door and went in. I was allowed to have a sniff around. Then the male biped went to get our stuff from the car. They put a blanket in the corner of the room for me, they found my bowls and gave me some water. They unpacked some of their things and then we went for another walk.

When we came back in my bipeds got ready for bed, while I had another sniff around the room. Then they told me to settle down on the blanket in the corner and they climbed into bed. I was very tired and I tried to settle down, but everything was different and so exciting – I kept getting up for another sniff around the room.

Eventually I settled down next to their bed and went to sleep. The next morning, one of my bipeds took me out for a short walk as soon as they were awake. While they were getting ready to go to breakfast, the female said something that still puzzles me. She said that she’d not slept very well because there had been loud snoring on both sides of her most of the night. I’d heard the male biped snoring, before I went to sleep, but I still can’t work out where the second lot of snoring could have come from!

We went to have breakfast and they chose a table by the window with space next to the wall. I settled down by the wall while they ate. I was really surprised when some sausage was handed down to me!

I was having a wonderful weekend and it had only just begun. I had lots more fun in the next few days, but I’ll tell you more about that another time.

See you next Wednesday!

  2. I can’t wait to hear the rest, Clowie! I just know it’s going to be good. 🙂

  3. We go on vacation too! Enjoy every minute!

  4. Oh Dog! This sounds like such an amazing adventure! You are soooooo lucky!

  5. Clowie, you are always so sweet and good. Dogs love to go with their people, cats like to run under the bed!

    • Thank you! Yes, I love to go out and about with the bipeds, I have a wonderful time. But my cats are like you, if there’s anything too unusual at home they go and hide somewhere they feel safe.

  6. Wow Clowie, your first vacation away sounds like it went off smashingly!! 😀 Good job on being so well behaved! Was your restaurant inside? Cause that would be incredible if it was! My first vacation was incredible too…I was really worried about the whole thing, but when we finally arrived I had the greatest time! Hotels have wonderful smells too!! 😀

    • Yes, the restaurant was inside. This was in England and although most restaurants don’t allow dogs, there’s no law against it. I think the law states that dogs mustn’t be in the food preparation area. Some dog friendly hotels, guest houses and pubs allow dogs in the restaurant. It’s lovely to be allowed in! I’m glad you enjoyed your first holiday – it’s an amazing experience to go away with our people.

  7. Oh Clowie, everything sounds so exciting! I love having vacation with my peeps and I always sit still and behave myself in the car because I know I’m going to have lots of fun when the car finally stops. You did very well, Clowie! Can’t wait to hear more from you soon!!!

    • Thanks Eva. It is fun to go on holiday with our people! Like you, I’m always good in the car because it’s always an adventure – I never know where it will take us!

  8. Are you able to be in the car for more than 30 minutes? Honest question, I’m just wondering about that part of your story.

    • I was still quite young and I was very excited – I think they were in the hopes of tiring me out with extra walks! When we take a long journey now, they’ll stop and let me stretch my legs and have a drink every couple of hours or so. If I’m obviously asleep, they may continue for longer.

  9. What a great post. Too funny, the snoring. Glad you got to go with the bipeds. We are so glad you got to go on the vacation and it sounds like you were such a good boy. Can’t wait to hear the next part.

  10. This sounds like the beginning of a really fun trip for you! Did you get more sausages the next morning?

    • Yes, it was lots of fun and I did get sausages again the next morning. I hardly ever get sausages at home, so that’s one of the wonderful things about going on holiday!

  11. That sounds like a fun time! I wonder if there was a ghosty in the room that was snoring too cause I just know that it could not have possibly been you!!

  12. What a great trip Clowie – I hope the snoring didn’t keep you awake too!! Tee Hee

    Big wags,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

  13. Clowie I hope your bipeds took some pictures to share with us and so glad you had a marvelous time! Our Oceana accompanies me on my trips to Florida and our favorite thing to do is stop for ice cream at Dairy Queen where she enjoys a small vanilla cone. I hope your life is filled with many holidays!

  14. Wow Clowie did you get to go to a doggie hotel?! What a lucky girl! This cracked me up btw:but I “still can’t work out where the second lot of snoring could have come from!”

  15. Oh, sweet Clowie you must have been worrying some when your Bipeds came back without the cats and was packing things. We are happy you got to go and all turned out well for you. Will be looking forward to hearing about the fun you had when you tell about it in your next post. Hugs and nose kisses

  16. Sounds like you had a great trip! Rocco loves traveling with us too! I’m looking forward to part 2 🙂

  17. I remember my first holiday too! It’s so much fun to get to go along (even if you’re accused of snoring–the nerve). I bet that sausage was YUMMY.
