Today is an exciting day for Sammy (onespoiledcat). He is a very special cat and he’s one of the first friends I made in the blogging world. Sammy is visiting many bloggers today to see the places that they choose to share with him.
Sammy landed his hot air balloon in my back garden in time to join us for breakfast. After some refreshment he was ready for an adventure. We set off and arrived at the boatyard where a narrow boat was being prepared for us.
We were soon on board, along with our provisions for the day. It was a relaxing way of exploring part of the Leeds and Liverpool canal.
The canal was completed and officially opened 200 years ago. It took many years to build and parts of it were open sooner than that.
The canal was built for transporting goods. But these days, the boats on the canal are leisure boats. The towpath is no longer used by horses pulling the barges along, but you’ll meet walkers, joggers and cyclists.
We hadn’t gone far when some ducks flew towards us in a hurry. They were keen to meet Sammy.
As you can see from the following photographs, we explored a quiet section of the canal away from the bustle of the towns it flows through.
I think Sammy enjoyed his visit. I do hope so!
You’ll find all the other blogs taking part in this event on this special page on Dory’s Backyard, so you can visit all the places that Sammy does.
This special day for Sammy was organised by Madi and Easy. You can read about it here.
Sadly, our friend Easy passed away very suddenly – our thoughts are with his family.
Thank you for visiting me, Sammy. I hope you enjoy today.
Great to meet you Clowie! I bet Sammy enjoyed his trip on the canal. Did he chase the ducks?
Toodle pip!
Bertie.
Thanks for coming on over to see me Bertie.
Sammy was very polite and didn’t chase the ducks, but I think he was tempted!
What a wonderful thing you are all doing for Sammy. He was one of my first blogging friends too.
Thank you, I’ve been enjoying looking at the posts and I’m sure there will be more by the end of the day.
wow imagine that… 200 years old water and it is still fresh :o) I sometimes wish we still had a little bit of the ole times as the canal was a way to transport a lot of things… what a fab place you picked, BRAVO!

What a lovely trip you had with Sammy! I couldn’t help but notice in one of the pictures you took, Clowie… Are those my goose friends? They disappear every autumn, and I’ve been wondering where they get to…
Hi Stella! I don’t think those geese are yours, but it is possible. I’ll tell you what happened. They arrived in groups over the space of about six weeks in the autumn until there were hundreds and hundreds of them. Then they all flew away. I’ve been told, but not checked it out for myself yet, that these are geese that spend the summer in this country and then head south for the winter. They gather here to migrate. I’m told the same thing happens in the Spring in reverse. They will all arrive together and spend a few weeks here and gradually disperse. There are still 3 or 4 here, so when I see them I’ll try to ask them. It would be nice if they’re your geese on their travels. I never saw a single one during the summer.
Thank you, Clowie. I’d like to know. I miss them when they go (they play a good game of Chase with me). I like it when they come back in the Spring – they call me as they fly into our bay so I know they’re back!

That is interesting, Stella. These geese called out to me as they arrived and as they left. I think it’s another clue – I can’t believe that all geese are that polite!
Um, well… They’re Canadian!
